Where In Singapore? Sembawang: Best Food, Schools & Amenities in the Area

Curious of what Sembawang has to offer you as a home buyer? Read on to find out more!

A small town tucked away in the northern part of Singapore, Sembawang may be overlooked by its neighbouring estate Yishun, but it definitely can hold its own with its abundance of food, amenities and entertainment.

[Amenities]

Named after the Sembawang tree, this peaceful district isn’t shy of some very exciting amenities.

Everyone would’ve heard of the major shopping malls such as Sembawang Shopping Centre and Sun Plaza if they’ve been in Sembawang. You’ll always be spoilt for choice no matter what your needs are with these amenities in place.

Tucked right behind Sembawang Shopping Centre is Jalan Malu Malu, holding a handful of shophouses and cafes. A perfect nook to escape the demands of the bustling city.

The newest feature situated in Sembawang is Canberra MRT station that just opened on November 2. The newly built station is located in between Yishun and Sembawang stations which will enable commuters to travel to and from the CBD in just 30 minutes!

Sembawang Park is peaceful and quaint, perfect for group get togethers. You can use the barbecue pits there or reel in fishes at the fishing jetty. If you just feel like taking a break from the hustle and bustle of life, sit back and relax while enjoying the sea breeze at one of Singapore’s last remaining natural beaches.

A special feature of this park has to be the battleship-designed playground seated on a sandpit, which has become uncommon in Singapore as most playgrounds are being replaced with carpet grounds. It is perfect for you and your children to frolic away during the weekend.

[Did You Know?]

The Sembawang Jetty was built in the 1940s by the British but was only completed during the Japanese Occupation? Now, it is used as a popular fishing spot with the aesthetically pleasing view of Johor Bahru in the distance.

[Food]

The most talked about dish in the heart of this estate has to be the White Seafood Bee Hoon located at The White Restaurant. Make your way here if you’re looking for some wholesome goodness that will tame your hungry tummy.

Right down the road, you’ll also find another shophouse that is known for their claypot chicken rice. Served piping hot and in three sizes, small, medium and large, it’ll definitely tantalise your tastebuds.

[Did You Know?]

Did you know that Sembawang holds Singapore’s only hot spring. Japanese soldiers used it as a recreational thermal bath area during the Japanese occupation. It has recently been re-opened with a complete revamp – with a cascading pool, a cafe and a floral walk all surrounding the hot spring.

[Schools]

The top schools in Sembawang includes schools such as Canberra Primary School which is in the top 50 of the best schools in Singapore and Sembawang Secondary School.

[Future Development]

An exciting upcoming project in Sembawang is the 12-hectare Bukit Canberra that is opening progressively in 2020 which will be located only 5 minutes away from Sembawang MRT station.

Some features of Bukit Canberra would be a hawker centre, an indoor and outdoor sport facility, a polyclinic and senior care centre. The space will also provide green spaces for community farming and for leisure such as the therapeutic gardens and forest gym.
