On the first day of the lunar new year, the act of sweeping and taking out the trash is associate with dumping out good luck and good fortune from the house.

No Washing of Hair

Hair must not be washed on the first day of the lunar year, as the pronunciation of hair is similar to “fa” in 发财” which means good wealth. So it is not advisable to wash away one’s good fortune at the start of the new year.
